Sometimes called Bernard in the old records, doubtless from his nicknam
Barney.
Barnaby and his brother Thomas seem to have been very closely associated until
Thomas and all his family moved to Shelby County, Indiana, from Scott Co. KY in
1828. That they ever saw each other again seems doubtful.
Barnaby experienced many tragedies in his personal life. His first wif
Theresa Hardy, died in 1816 leaving him with four children. They had lost three.
His second wife, Cecelia Gough, lived only ten years, after marriage and left
three more children. His third wife, Catherine Deering, survived him with four
daughters of her own and later gave birth to a posthumous baby, Barniellen.
His oldest son, George L, died before his father and had a sad life himself.
He married Mary Ann Hunter, who died in Nov. 1837 only six months before him.
They had lost three children, and a fourth died between the death of Mary Ann
and George. He was survived by his two oldest children, Isabella and Barney.
During the 1830's some of Barnaby's friends and relatives moved to Monroe Co.
MO. Barnaby's young brother-in-law and sister-in-law Beorge B. Gough and
Rebecca were among them. In Sept. 1840, Barnaby sold his farms and followed
them to Monroe Co. where he lived only two years.
Many of Barnaby's descendants have lived in Monroe Co. and adjacent Shelby
Co., but the Worland name persists only in the descendants of John Henry
Worland and James Guy Worland.
