There is this footnote to Gideon in Drapers to America
"In reference to the descendants of Gideon Draper, the author desires to say, that they have become so widely scattered, and the majority are so indifferent to genealogical matters, that it has been with the utmost difficulty that any connecting lines could be established. The use so generally, in this branch, of the name of Gideon, has also tended to greatly confuse and delay the work, and it may be said that at least three times as much labor has been done to collect the following date as that devoted to any other branch of the family, and if there are errors, the reader will please blame those whose duty it was to supply the information, and who neglected to do so, although repeatedly urged."

Joyce and Margaret,
I will send this info to both of you at once since I think you would both be
interested.
In looking back through some old notes, I found that I had copied some info
from the 1790 NY Census in Washington Co. On page 188, in Granville Twp.,
the following three Draper families are listed consecutively: James (1
adult male, 2 males under 16, 1 female); Nathan (1-1-2), Nathan; Jr.
(1-0-3). 12 visits away is Nathaniel Draper (1-2-5). Granville, NY, is
perhaps 30 miles north and slightly west of Shaftsbury, VT.
File this under "For What It's Worth". May be of some importance in later
research.

Email received Sept. 9, 1998 from Barbara Spain, BLBSJOS@aol.com
Joyce: I received your e-mail about the Drapers, specifically, your Gideon,
and his parents, Nathan and Joanna Robards. Yes, Nathan and Joanna are my
ancestors, too. My descent is through their daughter, Joanna, who married
Samuel Harnden.
I find it interesting that you used the spelling "Robards." I have seen that
used a couple times, but I have usually seen it spelled "Roberts." Do you
have reason to believe the name was actually "Robards?" Probably most
research we would do would list the two spellings as one family; but one never
knows for sure.
You say that you have a Nathan and a Nathan Jr. in the 1790 Census for
Washington Co., NY and you wonder if this is the Nathan who married Joanna. I
am almost certain that it is. I, too, have seen that Census, and almost all
the Drapers were in NY at that time, as was Samuel Harnden, who my Joanna
married. You probably noticed, as I did, that in 1790, James, Nathan, and
Nathan, Jr., were all living in a row, with Nathaniel a few houses away and
Samuel Harnden a few houses away from the Drapers. Jonathan Harnden was
there, too. I'm not sure how Jonathan was related to my Samuel.
Another interesting piece of information is that Nathaniel Draper, son of
Nathan and Joanna, married a Hannah Roberts in 1779. She was probably related to Joanna in some way, besides the fact that Hannah was Joanna's daughter-in-law.
You ask if I can shed any light on death dates for Nathan and Joanna.
Unfortunately, I cannot. I do know that they were married on 18 January, 1748
in Killingly, CT. But their death dates and places are unknown to me.
You say your Gideon died in Union Co., Ohio. Was he buried there as well? I have recorded that Gideon, Nathan, Jr., and Ruben, all served in the Dutchess County, NY, Militia, and that their brother John served in the Albany County,
Ny, Militia. Perhaps that is something you can add to your records.
I was glad to hear from you, and I hope we can stay in touch by e-mail.

These census records show that Gideon was probably born 1760-1765.
From Beers History of Union County, 1883, p. 677;
Gideon Draper, a native of Vermont, married Ruth Harris of the same State and, at an advanced age, in 1838 came with his family to Ohio and settled in Taylor Township, where he died the next year, November 26, 1839, aged seventy-eight years. His wife had died many years before in their native State.
James Draper, also a native of Vermont, settled in this township in 1838. He married Joanna Draper in his native State. He died October 28, 1860, aged seventy years; his wife died March 3, 1861, aged sixty-years.
Ira Draper, son of Gideon Draper, married Betsy Nurse, and was a resident of this township till his death, May 14, 1859, aged seventy-two years.
Page 676 states that a George Draper came to the township in 1843-44.
----------------------
Robert C. Green was executor of Gideon's estate.
From a letter from Elaine Chapman dated Aug. 3, 1997
I was disappointed in the documents I found. I thought I would open up the folder and everything would be there. Robert C. Green was, of course, the administer of Gideon Draper's estate. I didn't see a will. apparently he had none. The document number was CP-107 Gideon Draper 1839. Apparently Gideon's sons could not read, write or sign their names, but Robert Green seemed very able. I copied the sale bill and one on what the heirs received. There was a little packet full of tiny bits or slips of paper that each of the heirs and other persons with business had signed. They all signed their X but Robert Green. On May 4, 1844 a document mentions Parley and also Asa. It mentioned Asa as being at
Broskpart.
Some of Robert Green's expenses were traveling to the State of New York $26.25, searching records, $2.00, lawyer's costs $1.00 and letters and postage $2.25. There was also a July 30, 1840 bill submitted to the estate for the attending physician. I assume Robert Green may have went to Oneida Co., New York.
--------------------
These are the heirs listed by Robert C. Green for the estate of Gideon Draper
Robert C. Green, Asa Draper, Parley Draper, Ira Draper, James Draper, Gideon Draper, and Rial Draper.
It is possible that Orin Draper, b. 1792 was also a son of Gideon. He filed a lawsuit against Robert C. Green ; apparently as Robert was administrator of the estate; the children of Gideon were charged for the fees.

I believe that the Gideon Draper you are looking for is one of at least six children of Nathan Draper and Johanah Robards (Roberts). Nathan (#1299 in DIA) was b. 9 Apr 1725, marr. Johanah 18 Jan 1748 in Killingly CT and moved to Shaftsbury, VT. Their children included Nathan b. 26 Dec 1749, Ruben b. 11 May 1751, James b. 9 Jul 1758, Sarah 6 Nov 1760, Gideon b. 20 Oct 1762, and John b. 15 May 1765. Poss. also Nathaniel b. 1763.
Gideon had at least Gideon, Jr., Asa (Asaph?), Ira and James.
Nathan's lineage is well documented in Drapers in America, of which I have a copy and am willing to share whatever you need.
-------------------
The book, Drapers in America states that Nathan Draper and his sons moved to Shaftsbury, VT. Some of the family then moved to New York. James, Jonathan, Nathan and the other brothers are found in Washington Co., NY by the 1800 census, although Gideon is still found in Shaftsbury.
---------------------
If the above article from the Union County History Books and the tombstone are correct, then Gideon was born in 1761. (The History Book seems to have the dates based on old cemetery records, or visa versa.) However, I find that the ages given on the early tombstones in Union Cemetery seem, like many tombstones, to be inaccurate. It may be that Gideon's children did not know his birthday, or did not realize that the stone was not accurate. It appears from Gideon's probate papers that they could not read or write.
However, from the proximity of the Nathan Draper family to Gideon, the closeness of the age difference recorded for Gideon, the lack of records in Vermont for the time period, and the fact that they appear to have traveled together, I feel that this is the pedigree for Gideon.19. Notes:
There used to be a Reuben (Erben) Harnden born 1786 in New York listed as the son of Samuel. We believe this is the same person.
Some people have listed an alternative name for this man as Harvey. I don't know where that comes from. Robert does make some sense, but Harvey doesn't really work.
Orbin was in the War of 1812:

Notes:
The following about Samuel is from Ken Harnden:
In 1816 he was constable in the Town of Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY
In March 1837 was constable of the Town of Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY and served as president in 1839, 1842 and 1843.
From History of Cayuga County, New York by Elliot G Storke.
From Geraldine Oakley's book:
"Charlotte Peacock Mahagan remembers that she was taught that Samuel's father was also named Samuel. He was the son of Samuel Harnden of Johnsburg in present day Warren Co., NY, but which
was in Washington Co., NY until 1810 when Warren Co., NY was formed.
He operated the Lock Store on the original Erie Canal in Port Byron at one time, and had a livery business there. The store was operated only while the canal ran through the village of Port Byron, not after the canal bed was moved north of the village. The NY census of 1855 says he had lived in Port Byron for 43 years, so he would have arrived there about 1812. He was usually described as a harness maker and shoe maker, probably taught the trade by his father who was a shoemaker and harness maker, and a trade which Samuel Jr taught to his sons.
Two account books from his businesses remain. One is from the store
and the other reflects his business as a shoemaker. These are held in
1999 by Geraldine Oakley."Samuel married Higley, Asenath 1814, Cayuga, NY. Asenath was born 15 Mar 1791, Ballston, Saratoga, NY, USA; died Bet. 1821 - 1830. [Group Sheet]
