    Joyce: I received your e-mail about the Drapers, specifically, your Gideon,
    and his parents, Nathan and Joanna Robards. Yes, Nathan and Joanna are my
    ancestors, too. My descent is through their daughter, Joanna, who married
    Samuel Harnden.
    I find it interesting that you used the spelling "Robards." I have seen that
    used a couple times, but I have usually seen it spelled "Roberts." Do you
    have reason to believe the name was actually "Robards?" Probably most
    research we would do would list the two spellings as one family; but one never
    knows for sure.
    You say that you have a Nathan and a Nathan Jr. in the 1790 Census for
    Washington Co., NY and you wonder if this is the Nathan who married Joanna. I
    am almost certain that it is. I, too, have seen that Census, and almost all
    the Drapers were in NY at that time, as was Samuel Harnden, who my Joanna
    married. You probably noticed, as I did, that in 1790, James, Nathan, and
    Nathan, Jr., were all living in a row, with Nathaniel a few houses away and
    Samuel Harnden a few houses away from the Drapers. Jonathan Harnden was
    there, too. I'm not sure how Jonathan was related to my Samuel.
    Another interesting piece of information is that Nathaniel Draper, son of
    Nathan and Joanna, married a Hannah Roberts in 1779. She was probably related to Joanna in some way, besides the fact that Hannah was Joanna's daughter-in-law.
    You ask if I can shed any light on death dates for Nathan and Joanna.
    Unfortunately, I cannot. I do know that they were married on 18 January, 1748
    in Killingly, CT. But their death dates and places are unknown to me.
    You say your Gideon died in Union Co., Ohio. Was he buried there as well? I have recorded that Gideon, Nathan, Jr., and Ruben, all served in the Dutchess County, NY, Militia, and that their brother John served in the Albany County,
    Ny, Militia. Perhaps that is something you can add to your records.

    In 1997, Andrew Quackenbush sent Barbara Spain and Rose Harnden a copy of Ziba's will as he read it from microfilm. He had some problem reading all of the words, it is typed here by Barbara, just as Andrew sent it to her. Andrew's source was "Wills of Northumberland County, cabinet 2, reel #547, Archives of Ontario, Toronto.

    "In the name of God Amen. I Ziba Harnden Senior, of the township of Haldimand county of Northumberland and Province of Upper Canada Yeoman Being of sound and disposing mind and memory to make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say first I wish that all my just debts funeral charges be paid and discharged by my executors herein after mentioned and named. I will and bequeath to my dear and beloved wife Polly as long as she shall continue my widow the front end of lots no. sixteen and seventeen to the road leading three said conshion (?) cornering at the south east angles of lot no. sixteen in the first concession of Haldimand then north sixteen degrees one hundred road to the (?) road then westwardly along the said road to the limits between lots no. seventeen and eighteen then south sixteen degrees last (?) to the Berr (?) line then north seventy (?) east to the (?) of Bisirsis and when she ceases to be my widow the above discribed land to be my son William Harnden property to him his heirs and (?) forever and I give to my wife Polly all the household furniture Goods and Chattels after paying my first debts to (?) of as she shall think best. 3.     There used to be a Reuben (Erben) Harnden born 1786 in New York listed as the son of Samuel. We believe this is the same person.

    Some people have listed an alternative name for this man as Harvey. I don't know where that comes from. Robert does make some sense, but Harvey doesn't really work.

    In 1816 he was constable in the Town of Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY

    In March 1837 was constable of the Town of Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY and served as president in 1839, 1842 and 1843.

    From Geraldine Oakley's book:
    "Charlotte Peacock Mahagan remembers that she was taught that Samuel's father was also named Samuel. He was the son of Samuel Harnden of Johnsburg in present day Warren Co., NY, but which
    was in Washington Co., NY until 1810 when Warren Co., NY was formed.

    He operated the Lock Store on the original Erie Canal in Port Byron at one time, and had a livery business there. The store was operated only while the canal ran through the village of Port Byron, not after the canal bed was moved north of the village. The NY census of 1855 says he had lived in Port Byron for 43 years, so he would have arrived there about 1812. He was usually described as a harness maker and shoe maker, probably taught the trade by his father who was a shoemaker and harness maker, and a trade which Samuel Jr taught to his sons.

    Two account books from his businesses remain. One is from the store
    and the other reflects his business as a shoemaker. These are held in
    1999 by Geraldine Oakley."

When he was about seven years of age his family left New England and went to New York State and then later to Haldimand, Ontario, where he married. He lived in Eddystone, Ontario, a town seven miles from Grafton where he was a deacon in the church.

    Hello fellow Harnden researchers:

    James Harnden, son of Ziba Harnden, was living with his wife Olive Dewey up in Haldimand, Ontario, where they had several children.

    In the 1861 Census, James and Olive were not included in the Haldimand Census, but Emma Richards and her new husband, Robert Boucher, were in a house and were taking care of James and Olive Harnden's six children, aged 14 down to 1. This must have been quite an undertaking for Emma, because she was only 15 years old herself!

    Emma Richards Boucher's mother was Emily Harnden, James Harnden's sister. Ziba was their father.

    Anyway in 1861, James and Olive were away somewhere. By the 1871 Haldimand Census, James Harnden is listed as "deaf and dumb."

    My question is, do any of you know what happened to James to make the census taker list him this way? Was he away in 1861 because of some accident he suffered? Is that what caused him to be deaf and dumb, or did he have a stroke or something similar?

    If any of you know the answer to this question, I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you. Actually, it would be nice to hear from any of you, anyway.

    Disceased said that he felt unwell and wished to stop a short time and get some feed for his colts. Disceased got still worse and I said he should have a doctor. Disceased said that he did not require a doctor expecting to recover in a short time, unto it was to late on account of the distance which I would have to send after.

    The disceased departed this life about 3 o'clock on the morning of the 6th ?.

    Disceased had got some money and a span of colts and I wish you to come or send after his property if you send you must send the power of attorney. I wish you to attend to it as soon as possible.

    When you come to Detroit then take the Great Western Rail Road to Woodstock ? Nine miles East of that place in the Township of Burford on the Brantford Road.

    Come with delay no more.

    Some researchers state that Simon had a daughter Laura Cecilia, but there have been no facts found to support this.

    "Simon Harnden, a farmer on section 7, Allegan Township, Allegan
    County, is the possessor of forty acres of good land. He came to Michigan in 1852, and stopped for a short time in Ionia County; he lived in Hillsdale County two years and then came to this county, living in Pine Plains for awhile and, in 1866, came to this township and purchased his present farm. He was born in Cayuga County, NY, 3 October 1818. Samuel and Asenath (Highley) Harnden, natives of New York, were the parents of our subject. The father was a boot and shoemaker and lived and died in New York. He was a Democrat in politics, held the office of Postmaster, and was, in religion, a member of the Univeralist Church. He was the parent of five children. Enos and our subject are now living.

    Simon Harnden received his education in his native county and
    learned the trade of a shoemaker which he followed for a number of years in the East and also since coming to Michigan. He was Trustee of the village of Port Byron, in his native county. He was married, in 1841, to Maretta Harrington, the daughter of Ebenezer and Emily (Mentor) Harrington, natives of Massachusetts. Mr. Harrington was a carriagemaker, and later in life removed to Cayuga County, NY, where he followed his trade until death. His good wife bore him five children: Almira (Mrs. Harnden) and Calista (Mrs. Storey) are now living. He was a Whig in politics.

    Our subject and his wife are the happy parents of eight children,
    all living, whose record is as follows: Almira, now Mrs. George
    Whitney, is the mother of two children, Laura and Glenn; Romain married Mary Peet and is the father of two sons, Lester and Clarence; Lucy married Robert McQueen and they have eight children, John, Willie, Alice, James, Grover, Nellie, Martin and Charles; Sophia, Mrs. Howard Powers, has become the mother of two daughters, Belle and Minn; Lester married Carrie Rich, and two children have been born to them, Rich, and Elma; Alice, Mrs. Bliss, has two children, Roy and Rhoda; Charles is in the grocery business at Battle Creek, his brother-in-law, Mr. Bliss being his partner, under the firm name of Bliss & Harnden; Emily, Mrs. August Swedberg, is the mother of one child, Alice. Mr. Swedberg is an editor at Battle Creek. Mr Harnden, of whom we write, has a fine home with all modern conveniences and does a general farming business on his place,
    in which he is quite successful. He belongs to the Democratic party."
