2 PLAC Military Rec.: King Philip's War, 1675-76

      From Drapers in America

James was a soldier in the King Phillip War during the year 1675. James recieved from his father, part of the family farm in Roxbury. This he sold to John Aldis and he then bought the estate below Baker Street where he and his wife kept and ordinary. the location of theis is fixed by James' Granddaughter, Jemima Turner. Her father, Ebenezer, when she was a girl, took her to visit the old house where he was born. (She related this to Dr. A. W. Draper.) It was from here that James and Exbenezer went to Green Lodge, Dedham.

James was mortally injured during a wrestling match on May Day. As was the custom in England, this day was reserved for a festival, at which a maypole was erected, about which wrestling, pitching quoits
and other games were held. On that day, an individual arrived at the maypole and declared himself the wrestling champion and took on all comers, all of whom he threw to the ground. The crowd was commenting that James Draper would be a good match for the man. No sooner said than James and his wife Abigail arrived together on horseback. James was urged to wrestle the champion. At first he declined, but was dragged from his horse, despite Abigail's attempts to keep him from being taken.

He met the champion, and after having been given the signal, threw him to the ground. "Unfair" was cried by the bested man, and another match was declared. Again, he won the match. However, he severely broke the sinew in his leg and never recovered. James was carried back to his house and was never able to go out again.

James and Abigail are buried in First Parish Cemetery, Dedham, MA,
      Their epitaph reads:

2 Samuel 1: 23. They were lovely & pleasant in their lives and in their death they were not divided.

"The stroke of death, hath laid my head
Down in this dark & silent bed,
The Trump shall sound, I hope to rise,
And meet my Saviour in the Skies."

James death is recorded iIn the Roxbury Vital records. He is referred to as Sergt.
